Ryan received his B.A. in chemistry from Carleton College in 2012, where he also played collegiate soccer. He completed his PhD in 2018 at the University of Minnesota with Professor Connie Lu, where his research harnessed metal-metal interactions to catalyze reactions that neither metal alone can mediate. His postdoctoral research, with Professor Matt Sigman at the University of Utah, was highly collaborative within the NSF-CCHF. There, he helped develop new molecular descriptors and predictive models for understanding dirhodium C−H functionalization catalysis. After gaining teaching and mentoring experience working as a Robbins Fellow with Professor Nicholas Ball and his students at Pomona College, he started as an Assistant Professor at Cal State Fullerton in August 2023. His group will be focused on applying interpretable data science tools to understand and make predictions about metal-catalyzed reactions.
